Galilee: A Spiritual and Faith Formation Program 2017-2019
The Catholic Institute of Western Australia proudly presents Galilee – A Spiritual and Faith Formation Program for teachers and leaders in Catholic Schools! The program is named after the story of the resurrection of Jesus as recorded in Matthew, which states: “Indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him,” (Matt 28:7b). This quote from Matthew highlights the idea of a journey which needs to be taken – to Galilee – the result of which is coming face to face with Jesus, to see him, not only externally but, more in keeping with the program, to see him with the “eyes of the heart,” to quote Saint Benedict.
The Galilee program of spiritual and faith formation is unique to each person. When people explore their spiritual and faith life journeys, no “one size fits all”. The program offers people the opportunity to deepen their relationship with God, self and others.
Entering into a relationship with God involves entering into the Mystery of God. Sometimes, in the hectic turmoil of professional life, it may be very difficult to reflect on and find a way to communicate to others the nature of an encounter with God. A program of formation such as Galilee can lead people to a greater consciousness of the Mystery of God present in their lives, as their search for knowledge and insight increases over the program.
The spiritual and faith formation program includes a balanced exploration of people’s spiritual and faith journeys. At the core of people’s spiritual experiences are those moments of profound personal change or ‘metanoia’, which impact upon the choices people make. At the core of people’s faith experience is the challenge to freely and boldly proclaim the Good News and how they will live out the faith they profess.
The Galilee program is designed to provide new understandings and skills to enhance participants’ spiritual and faith capabilities. As many participants aspire to become leaders of their school communities, the program encourages a greater confidence in promoting a Catholic identity and worldview. The program covers topics drawn from the Scriptural and theological foundations of the Catholic spiritual and faith traditions. People are invited to critically explore the content and to practice prayerful exercises. This deep learning will support the teaching of a Catholic perspective both within Religious Education and across the school curriculum.
The Galilee program has eight modules or ‘Gatherings’ conducted over the next two years starting in Term 3, 2017. Six of the modules are scheduled over a Friday early evening and all day Saturday. Materials, light meals and refreshments will be provided. The modules are facilitated by Sr Margaret Scharf OP and held at the Newman Siena Centre, 33 Williamstown Road, Doubleview. The other two modules, also facilitated by Sr Margaret, are weekend retreats at St John of God Retreat Centre, Rockingham. These retreats begin Friday early evening and end just after Sunday lunchtime.
The program can contribute to the equivalent of two tertiary units at The University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA) within the Masters courses in Religious Education and towards Accreditation to Lead as well as satisfy hours for Accreditation renewal.
